Surprise #2

At that exact moment, half the lights in the park went out.

“What happened?” Stephie cried.

“What’s going on?” Hector shouted.

Unfortunately no one had an answer. (Actually, we all did, but no one wanted to say it.) Instead, we shuffled to the edge of the tree house and looked out over the darkened half of the park.

Janelle cleared her throat and in her best grown-up voice said, “It’s probably just a blown fuse.”

Nick turned and started for the ladder.

“Where you going?” Hector asked.

“If it’s a ghost,” Nick said, “I’m going to stop it!”

We all traded looks. That’s one thing you could say about Nick: He was brave. (Another thing you could say about him: He wasn’t always smart.)

“You’re not climbing down there,” Stephie said.

“Why not?” he asked.

We had hundreds of reasons (or maybe a thousand, since you know my math skills). But they all spelled the same thing:

D - E - T - H

(Sometimes I’m not so good at spelling, either.)
